The Adventures of Borka

A story ending, based on the original book written by John Burningham.

Borka was a gosling, born with no feathers on her breast. Her mother, Mrs. Plumpster, knitted Borka  a grey woollen sweater to keep her warm and in the original story, Borka was left behind when her family migrated. Feeling very sad, she found her way to a boat on the river and travelled with a dog and two shipmates until they arrived in London. Once there, she started a new life at Kew Gardens, where she met Ferdinand, a young gander.

Lowen's story has been written to follow on from the first part of the original story.

Borka stood on one leg in the reed bed, a tear rolling down her beak.

“Can you help me take my jumper off? I want to go and fly like you! That heavy jumper will slow me down. But now I want to fly with you.”

So then Mr. Plumpster said,

“Are you ready?”

And they were off!

But then Borka said,

“I am falling! My breast is cold.”

Up in the sky ahead, Mrs. Plumpster saw a hot air balloon. It was the colour of a rainbow. Mrs.Plumpster said,

“Fly over to the basket on that hot air balloon.

You will be safe in there!”

Just then, a little boy pulled her up into the hot air balloon. The boy called to Borka.

“Look up and you will see beautiful colours of the rainbow!”

Borka saw flames from the hot air balloon. She looked up again. She saw red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. It was lovely! Borka had never seen anything as beautiful before!

Then, a short while later, the hot air balloon landed. As the boy, Adam, looked at his rabbit Fluffy, he stared at the jumper on Fluffy's tummy and had an idea! He put it on Borka!  Borka was so happy, she trotted off in amazement!

Then she went back to the reed bed to see if her family was back and they were! Borka was so happy that they were safe.

Soon afterwards, Borka felt a bit tired so she went under a tree to find a dry spot to go to sleep. Just then, her mum came and gave her a little kiss! Borka smiled and went back to sleep.

At last the balloon came back. It took Borka and her family three hours to get to London. She looked around her. She was so happy because she was going to Kew Gardens, this time, not alone!
